An Introduction to Nerja, Maro And Frigiliana.
Nerja
Barely touched by the package holiday market and with impressive mountain scenery - Nerja is at the easterly end of the region, only 50 km's from Malaga and within one hour from Granada. Nerja is the tourist capital of the Axarquia. You will enjoy the mild climate the whole year round and take advantage of the relaxed way of life of a town that still retains much of the character of its Moorish past. Today Nerja offers everything the discerning holiday maker could wish for.
Restaurants and bars are plentiful and to suit every taste and pocket. Open air enthusiasts will enjoy the wonderful countryside in the area, for those who seek alternative activities on their holiday, there is fishing, diving, water skiing, canoeing, hiking, cycling, horse riding and parascending and of course there is golf at Baviera and Anoreta golf courses which are ten and twenty minutes drive.
There are 9 Km's of beaches including the internationally famous "Blue Flag" Burriana beach. The small coves below the impressive cliffs have been the inspiration of numerous artists who have come to Nerja to live. In the town there are typically small shops offering local produce of the area, including sweet wine, olive oil, honey and tropical fruits. On the beach there are fish restaurants where you can enjoy the local "pescaito frito" (fried fish). There are also a wide range of international restaurants in town which offer a variety of menus to suit all tastes.
In Nerja is the beautiful XVI century El Salvador Church constructed in Baroque-Mudejar style, where religious festivals such as Holy week (Easter) and Festival of San Juan and Carmen Day are celebrated in their own special way. Of particular note is the acclaimed Nerja caves Festival which takes place amongst Stalactites and Stalagmites that were formed millions of years ago. Nerja Caves are currently the third most visited monument in the whole of Spain.
Frigiliana
Just seven kilometres north of Nerja is the typical pueblo blanco of Frigiliana which sits high on a mountain ridge overlooking the sea with spectacular panoramic views.
The village is a tangle of narrow cobbled streets lined by whitewashed houses, their wrought-iron balconies filled with planters of brilliant red geraniums. Small plazas provide shady seating while the village bars are popular with visitors who come here to taste the locally produced wine. There are also several excellent shops selling pottery and ceramics, including decorative plates with their distinctive Arab design.
Frigiliana is best explored by foot. There are several buses a day that run from Nerja or, alternatively, leave your car at the car park at the bottom of the hill. Although the village is deservedly on the coach tour circuit, thankfully it hasn't yet succumbed to the demands of mass tourism with innumerable souvenir shops and overpriced bars.
Maro
On the Outskirts of Nerja lies the sleepy little village of Maro. Here in the 1950's were discovered the enormous and now world famous Nerja Caves.
Located just three kilometres from the centre of town and comprise a natural archaeological cave containing the world's widest column. Wall paintings found inside the caves date from the Paleolithic and post-Paleolithic periods while skeletal remains and artifacts show that they were inhabited from about 25,000 BC up until the Bronze Age.
The Nerja caves have been sympathetically transformed into a natural theatre where several concerts and ballets are staged during the summer. During July and August this year there is the 38th International Cave Festival with performances by manor international artists planned.
Maro has a small selection of very Spanish bars and restaurants - the locals are a very friendly breed and are sure to make you feel at home.
